Chengalayi Grama Panchayat is a beautiful hilly-area village panchayat located in Thaliparamba Taluk of Kannur district. Situated on the banks of the Valapattanam River, this panchayat is quite notable for its greenery and agricultural culture.
Agricultural Heritage and Chengalayi Fields
Chengalayi was once rich with vast paddy fields. The water availability from the Valapattanam River had made this area an excellent center for rice cultivation.
The fields here are not just farmlands but also play a big role in maintaining the groundwater level of the area.
Over time, like other villages in Kerala, rice cultivation has decreased, but farmers here have shifted to vegetable farming, banana, pumpkin, and coconut cultivation. Various projects have been designed and implemented by the village panchayat to preserve the existing fields.
