Chengalayi panchayat is a body of twenty elected representatives of the people to manage the administrative affairs of the Panchayat Raj institutions. For a village panchayat, it is the main body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and carries out the day-to-day administration. The main components of a panchayat are: President: He is the head of the panchayat. He presides over the meetings and supervises the overall activities of the panchayat. Vice President: He assumes the duties in the absence of the president. Ward members: Representatives elected from each ward of the panchayat. Standing committees: To facilitate the decision-making of the panchayat, for matters such as finance, development, welfare, health, education, etc.

History of Grama Panchayat

Chengalayi has a rich history stretching from Neolithic caves to active farmers’ struggles. The region evolved from early settlements on hilltops to an agrarian culture along the riverbanks, and later, through migration, into modern cash-crop cultivation. Struggles against landlordism, water transport along the Valapattanam River, and the advent of schools and libraries accelerated the social transformation of this village. Its diverse places of worship and art forms ranging from Theyyam to Oppana are symbols of the strong religious harmony and cultural unity in this panchayat.
