Ward Committee/Gram Sabha
Gram Sabha
The Gram Sabha is the lowest yet one of the most important committees in the Indian democratic system. It is also a platform that ensures direct participation of the people in the functioning of local self-government bodies like the Gram Panchayats. All registered voters of a ward form the Gram Sabha of that ward.
Importance of Gram Sabha:
Direct Democracy: Since a large part of the country's population lives in rural areas, the Gram Sabha gives them an opportunity to have their voices directly heard and to participate in decisions on local issues.
Guidance for Panchayat Governance: The Gram Sabha has the authority to discuss and approve development projects, welfare schemes, new proposals, and other initiatives proposed by the Panchayat. It serves as a guiding framework for the Panchayat Council.
Transparency and Accountability: The progress of projects implemented by the Panchayat, income-expense details, asset registers, and so on are presented in the Gram Sabha.
